“SHUSHAN! the Musical,” began as a "Purim Spiel" I was asked to write for my synagogue, Romemu, in late 2017. But my retelling of the book of Esther included 14 original songs and was  brought to joyful life through the hard work of a cast and crew made up exclusively of volunteer community members. So we remounted the show again in 2019 and doubled the cast size! In the end I found myself with a fully fleshed-out musical, filled with rich characters of depth and humor. More so, it highlighted important issues like gender equality, immigration, and ethnic marginalization. In short, I wanted the audience to be mobilized towards empathy and social justice, through whimsy and fun.

Now, after some revisions (and a pandemic), “SHUSHAN! the Musical,” has been accepted to the Spark Theater Festival for Emerging Artists, and will be performed on stage for the first time, at the Emerging Artists Theater, 15 West 28th Street, on March 18 at 7:00pm. Incredibly, It has also been picked up by the 92nd Street Y’s Bronfman Center for a single performance on March 23!  The Y is able to cover some of the costs for that performance. But the remainder, plus the festival performance, are out of my own pocket.

This is where I need your help. These two performances are happening. And with a little strategy and luck this show might go even further. Currently I’m covering these costs alone. If you believe in me, the project, or the overarching mission of social change, please give your support. This is not for profit. My goal is to break even.

I have been working with a skilled associate producer to draft a realistic budget. I will need to raise $8,535 just to cover my costs. This includes:

six actors, a music director, two musicians of Middle Eastern instruments, a musical arranger, a creative consultant, an associate producer, and a stage manager, a designer, plus material costs like rehearsal space and script copies.

Fortunately, this project has been awarded fiscal sponsorship from the charitable organization, Fractured Atlas, so all donations are tax-deductible!

How?

“SHUSHAN! the Musical” is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of “SHUSHAN! the Musical” must be made payable to “Fractured Atlas” only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

It means a lot to me to support local artists and pay them fairly, especially given that the theater industry is still recovering from the pandemic. and I know it means a lot to you too. Please consider supporting this creative endeavor that is already supporting more than a dozen hard-working, talented people.

Thank you for your support – it means everything!

Yours,

Jake
